Midway United News

30 March 2009

Midway United Limited recently shipped, and tested, three 40’ containers of Siberian softwood veneer. Midway selected logs from their holdings in the Krasnoyarsk area that were peeled and dried. These are the Siberian species
            Siberian Red Pine (Pinus Sylvistris)
            Siberian Larch (Larix siberica

In addition, two hardwood species, aspen (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula pendula) were peeled. Samples of the softwood and hardwood veneers were selected by our future resin supplier for testing. This was to ensure the formulation of the resin to Midway’s stringent specifications.

Containers arrived in the United States and then were shipped by truck for testing. Initial test data showed excellent results from Siberian Red Pine. The Modulus of Elasticity for the Red Pine looks very promising with an overall average between 1.9 and 2.0E. The percentage of veneer with MOE’s in this range was 33% higher that that of Southern Pine. One thing that was surprising was that the Red Pine’s Specific Gravity (SG) was lower than that of Southern Pine. What this means to an LVL manufacturer is a veneer supply with a high percentage of veneer is the necessary strength value range and with less weight.

Additional samples of Red pine veneer have been sent to softwood sanded plywood manufacturers to begin testing, to see if the veneer can be used in combination with the local species as face veneer. Additionally, we are having paint drawdown tests performed to compare the Siberian Red Pine paintability versus Doug Fir, Southern Pine and Chilean Pine.
